RESTBERLIN

Restberlin by Stefan Landrock is a video art installation that captures Berlin's transformation over the past 20 years. The exhibition is grounded in a vast archive of digital memories, exploring the transient nature of images: the more we collect, the more they seem to disappear. Public spaces, events, and everyday life in Berlin are at the heart of this work, while a custom-built software, Eternal Light, continuously generates non-replicable audiovisual sequences.

The overall theme of Restberlin is the interplay between the individual and the mass, examining how personal experiences are shaped within the larger social fabric. Landrock not only documents social change but also amplifies the voices of those who speak their minds, reflecting the perspectives of everyday people engaged in public discourse. The installation investigates the evolution of memory and perception, influenced by advancements in technology. From the PAL-resolution DV cameras of 2003 to today’s 8K 360° footage, it illustrates how shifting media alters our relationship with the past.

With no beginning or end, Restberlin mirrors the fluidity of urban life, producing new versions as parameters change. By avoiding a fixed narrative, it challenges viewers to contemplate the connections between individuality, collective identity, time, and memory.
